Born in a gaol and raised in a workhouse, Cora Burns has always struggled to control the violence inside her. Haunted by memories of a terrible crime, she seeks a new life working as a servant in the house of scientist Thomas Jerwood. Here, Cora befriends a young girl, Violet, who seems to be the subject of a living experiment. But is Jerwood also secretly studying Cora...?
We wrote a script, contacted authentic historic sites and filmed on location to create atmospheric ‘teaser’ films that would stimulate additional interest in the book from readers and within the publishing industry. The films, stitching together to-camera interviews with the author, on location footage, B-roll and sound effects, were highly praised and unanimously positive.
‘The Great Escapations team did a fantastic job at bringing Carolyn Kirby’s debut novel The Conviction of Cora Burns to life. When they approached us with the idea of doing a short promotional film focusing on the location of the novel, we were really keen to see what the outcome would be and we were not disappointed when we saw the polished and professional end result. The Conviction of Cora Burns is a complex, multi-layered story with several locations in Birmingham at its heart. In consultation with Carolyn, the Great Escapations team put together the script and arranged the locations for filming with very little input needed from us as publishers at all. They captured the feel of the novel brilliantly, interspersing clips from the audio book with Carolyn’s own narration. It was clear that they felt passionately about helping us to tell the story of Carolyn’s fictional character Cora Burns and we’re really grateful to them for this opportunity’.
